Interview with pet photographer Leny97

Last week I was able to have a chat with the wonderful pet photographer. Calitha-Lena. We talked about her small pets, photography, and her tips for other photographers.


WindInTheCoffeeCup What's your favorite thing about photography small pets?
Calitha-Lena To work with living beings who have their own mind. You can not issue orders to an animal. If you say "Just sit there!" to a bunny he will always run away if he want. But that could you give better captures than you wanted to photograph.



WindInTheCoffeeCup Do you have any tips for other animal photographers?
Calitha-Lena Do not give up when an image is not the same as you want it to be.
And let the animal freely do what it wants. You can took funny pictures. : D
And have many patience, patience, patience! Animal photography needs so many time.



WindInTheCoffeeCup As a pet photographer, what do you want to capture and share with others?
Calitha-Lena I want to capture the best moments of animals, e. g. the individual habits. Every animal has a soul and you can catch it and see it on the pictures. But isn't easy, you need a lot of patience.



WindInTheCoffeeCup What do you feel is the most difficult thing about photography small pets?
Calitha-Lena To find someone who wants to help you.



WindInTheCoffeeCup How did you become interested in photography?
Calitha-Lena It was a few years ago...I got red roses from my father and when I saw them standing on my table...I thought it would be nice if I take a photo of my piggy and the roses. I asked my father and we took a photo. I still have this photo and I found it in my room last week, lol.
A bit later my dad bought a pocket camera and I started to photograph my pets (that time it were my bunny Schnüffel, my piggy Fritzi and two hamsters named Susi and Pauli.



WindInTheCoffeeCup What's your favorite thing about photography in general?
Calitha-Lena I love art and it was always in our family (my grandpa was a sculptor). When I was a little child I started to draw and paint (and not very bad, how I think ). And I started with photography because art is a hobby of my and photography is a kind of art. So the favorite thing is to have fun. ^^



WindInTheCoffeeCup Is there a specific kind of animal you've always wanted to photograph?
Calitha-Lena Yes. I want to photograph a Chinchilla.



WindInTheCoffeeCup What's your favorite kind of animal?
Calitha-Lena My favorite...mhm I haven't a favorite kind of animal, my favorite is always my current pet. If I have a rabbit - rabbits are my favorite animal, if I would have a dog, it would be the dog.



WindInTheCoffeeCup Where do you get your inspiration for your photos?
Calitha-Lena My most ideas I got spontaneous, e. g. the melon-pic, I got the idea when I eat a melon. Or the daisy pics - I saw the daisies and got the idea.
Yeah...I also got ideas from music and also from other artists.



WindInTheCoffeeCup What's been your favorite animals to photograph?
Calitha-Lena Oh, that's a very difficult question! mhm... I think it's still my guinea pig. But hamsters are also really funny.

:iconKitteh-Pawz: Honestly, there is not much I find hard about animal photography. But, what I do find difficult is having the patience and time to wait out the movements of the animal(s) you are photographing. They can be quite unpredictable.

:iconKitteh-Pawz: I would love to get the chance to photograph more wildlife. I don't get the chance to take many pictures of them since I live in the middle of the city. I wish I lived closer to a forest to experience, wild life on a daily basis.

:iconwindinthecoffeecup: What do you find is the hardest thing about animal photography?
:iconMorningIrbis: I believe the hardest thing about animal photography is that you have no idea what the animal will do. The animal obviously has a mind of it own therefore it could fly away or run off to do whatever it pleases. Several times I've had my cat rub against my lens while I tried to take photo's of her. I've also had incidents where there was a beautiful bird of a squirrel and it had the perfect pose but then once I got my camera out it was gone. I don't let those moments bug me. Patience is key.

:iconwindinthecoffeecup: As an animal photographer, what do you hope people take from your photos?
:iconsuezn: I would hope that people would feel a little peace and pleasure from my photos. That they might spark a smile, a memory, a wish or a little laughter in someone's day.

:iconwindinthecoffeecup: What do you find is the hardest thing about animal photography?
:iconsuezn: Animal photography can be difficult when you are trying to capture a specific angle or area, because it requires significant patience at times.

:iconwindinthecoffeecup: Is there a specific kind of animal you've always wanted to photograph?
:iconsuezn: Oh yes, Wolves and Lions. In fact, I am relocating next month, and there will be opportunities there for me
